How to Prep Your Skin for Myrtle Beach Summer

Seasonal April 15, 2026 6 min read

Living on the Grand Strand means you have exactly two seasons: beach season and getting-ready-for-beach season. By the time Memorial Day weekend rolls around, there is no time to work backward from sun damage that already happened or scramble for last-minute laser hair removal appointments.

The good news? A few strategic treatments in March and April set you up for a summer where you can actually enjoy the beach without worrying about what the photos look like.

Start with a Clean Slate: HydraFacial and Dermaplaning

Before anything else, clear the slate. A HydraFacial cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses skin with hydrating serums in about 45 minutes, leaving you noticeably brighter the same day. Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) that makes sunscreen sit unevenly and foundation look cakey.

Both treatments have zero downtime, which makes them perfect for a Friday appointment with nothing to hide afterward.

Start here in March. These are safe year-round and set the foundation for everything else you plan to do before June.

Correct Last Summer's Damage Before This Summer Starts

Here's the thing about sun spots and uneven tone: they don't appear immediately after a day at Litchfield Beach. They accumulate over years, then become very visible when the light is right.

Early spring is the ideal time for IPL photofacial treatments because UV exposure is lower, making post-treatment recovery easier and results more predictable.

Research published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine has demonstrated that intense pulsed light significantly reduces solar lentigines (sun spots) and irregular pigmentation after a series of treatments. With Myrtle Beach reaching a UV index of 9 or higher through most of summer, getting IPL done before June gives your cleared skin the best chance of staying clear.

If your concern is more texture than pigmentation, a chemical peel in the medium-depth range works by accelerating removal of photodamaged cells and stimulating new collagen formation. Both IPL and chemical peels require you to stay diligent about sun protection afterward, which is far easier in March than in August.

Laser Hair Removal: The "Start Now" Treatment

This is the appointment people always wish they had booked sooner. Laser hair removal requires multiple sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart because hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only effectively treat follicles in their active growth phase.

To be genuinely hair-free by July 4th weekend, you need to start by January or February at the latest. March is your last realistic window for a full series before peak season.

Six to eight sessions over the course of 6 to 8 months reduces hair by 70 to 90 percent in most patients, according to clinical studies on long-pulsed alexandrite and diode laser systems. After the initial series, most patients maintain results with occasional touch-ups once or twice a year.

If you are already past the window for a full series, dermaplaning removes surface hair and dead skin instantly with no heat restriction whatsoever, making it a solid bridge while you wait to start your laser series in the fall.

Treatments to Skip Once Summer Actually Arrives

Some treatments are a genuinely bad idea combined with heavy sun exposure. Anything that makes skin photosensitive, including medium-to-deep chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and IPL, should be avoided when you are spending multiple days a week on the beach.

Post-treatment skin absorbs UV more readily, and hyperpigmentation can actually worsen when treated skin gets sun exposure before it has fully healed.

This is not excessive caution. It is just how these treatments work.

Save the heavier treatments for fall, when the UV index drops and recovery is much more comfortable.
